Running for a Cause: How One Marathon Fueled Hope for Children in Poverty

Running a marathon is a huge bucket-list item for people and sometimes even a life goal. It is not only a challenge that pushes the body to the limit, but it also pushes the mind. For some, it’s more than just a personal goal; it’s a mission to make a difference and take on the challenge of running for a cause.

That was the case for Mark, our founder of Mosaic International, who ran his first-ever marathon not just for himself but for the children that Mosaic serves across the world.

His journey through training, setbacks, and ultimately crossing the finish line proved that running for a cause can be one of the most powerful motivators and inspirations.

With the support of donors, his family, and his close friend, Aaron, this marathon became a movement, raising funds and awareness for children facing poverty in Tanzania, the Philippines, Rwanda, and South Asia.

The Motivation: Running for Their Future

For Mark, signing up for the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach was about more than just a race, it was about running for the kids of Mosaic International.

These children endure extreme hardships, often uncertain of their next meal, yet they find hope through Mosaic’s outreach programs, which provide food, education, Bible lessons, and a safe space to experience joy and love.

When Mark announced his goal on social media, he made one thing clear: he wasn’t running for himself. He was running to ensure that these children knew they were not forgotten. His call to action was simple:

"Will you sponsor my run? Just $26—$1 for every mile—can fuel the work we’re doing in these communities."

The response was overwhelming. Friends, family, and supporters rallied behind him, contributing whatever they could. Every donation fueled his motivation, reminding him that this race was bigger than him.

Overcoming Challenges: Injury, Doubt, and Determination

Training for a marathon is never easy, but Mark faced an added hurdle: a knee injury that nearly sidelined him. Just one month before the race, he struggled to jog for even five minutes without pain. Doubts crept in, but his mission remained clear. Even if he had to walk across the finish line, he was determined to finish for the kids.

With each donation, each prayer, and each message of encouragement, he found new strength. And when race day arrived, there was no turning back.

The Power of Running Together: Aaron’s Unwavering Support

Mark didn’t run this race alone. By his side was Aaron, a dedicated supporter of Mosaic International and an experienced marathoner. Having completed six marathons, including Catalina, Los Angeles, Escondido, Huntington Beach, Diamond Valley Lake, and three Ragnar races, Aaron knew firsthand the demands of long-distance running.

But after crossing his last finish line, he had no intention of ever running another marathon...until Mark told him why he was running.

"I had no interest in ever running a marathon again in my life," Aaron admitted. "But the moment I heard from Mark what the cause was about, there was no question in my head. It was an immediate YES!"

Aaron’s passion for Mosaic International runs deep. Over the years, he has traveled on multiple mission trips with Mosaic, to Tanzania and to the Philippines, where he witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact of Mosaic. He saw the joy, hope, and transformation in the children and communities they serve.

"With all the mission trips I have experienced, I am always amazed at the incredible work Mosaic does," Aaron shared.
"I am continually inspired by the discipleship model they have embraced, raising up local leaders who disciple their own communities. It’s such a powerful and impactful approach, and I’ve seen the difference it makes firsthand."

Despite his demanding career as a firefighter, Aaron didn’t hesitate to commit to months of training. Every early morning run, every mile logged, and every sore muscle was fueled by his belief in Mosaic’s mission.

On race day, running alongside Mark wasn’t just about completing 26.2 miles—it was a statement of faith, perseverance, and purpose.

Crossing the finish line together was more than just an accomplishment. It was a celebration of community, a testament to the power of running for a cause, and a reflection of the transformative work Mosaic continues to do across the globe.

The Final Miles: Pushing Through the Pain

By mile 20, Mark’s body was depleted. The last 6.2 miles became a test of pure mental grit. With every aching step, he focused on the faces of the children Mosaic serves, the donors who believed in the mission, and the prayers that had carried him this far.

With worship music in his ears and unwavering faith in his heart, he pressed forward.

Then, in the final stretch, he spotted his family—his wife and daughters, ages 9 and 11, holding up handmade posters covered in photos of the kids Mosaic supports.

Tears filled his eyes as he realized that this moment wasn’t just about finishing a race; it was about showing his daughters and the world that perseverance, faith, and community can create real change.

The Impact: More Than a Race

In total, $1,438 was raised for children’s programs through Mosaic International. Every dollar will go directly toward providing meals, education, and outreach programs for children living in poverty.

"As Philippians 3:14 says, ‘I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.’ This marathon was more than just a physical challenge—it was a testament to perseverance, community, and purpose," Mark shared.

But the journey doesn’t end here. Mosaic International continues to expand its programs, and new opportunities to get involved are on the horizon.
