Christianity in Asia is a journey of redemption, hope, and transformation, a narrative beautifully embodied by the remarkable story of Jovan (name has been changed to protect his identity), a man whose encounter with Jesus redefined his life amidst profound adversity.

“Jovan” grew up in a Hindu family and had no interest in the God of the Bible. In his early days, when a friend handed him a Bible, he carelessly tossed it aside. But God’s plan for him was far from over. One day, when a friend invited him to church “one last time” on the condition of sitting in the back corner, Jovan walked in burdened with one burning question: “Why does a holy God do unholy things?” As if speaking directly to his heart, the pastor’s answer stirred something deep inside him.
In that moment, Jovan encountered Jesus in a way he never expected. His life transformed, he left the church a new man, eager to share the Good News despite the high cost. His family, unable to accept his newfound faith, reacted with brutal violence, leaving him beaten, tortured, and left for dead. Yet, in the ICU, when doctors warned him he might never survive, Jovan did the only thing he could: he prayed! His prayers for healing, strength, and even for the salvation of his estranged family became the cornerstone of his miraculous recovery.
Today, Jovan stands as a living testimony to God’s power, teaching college courses for ten hours a day, inspiring countless believers, and leading a life full of hope despite the scars of persecution.

This is just one story among millions unfolding across South Asia, a region where Christianity in Asia faces challenges and where hope is born in the midst of adversity.
Understanding the Landscape: The Reality of South Asia
South Asia is home to one-quarter of the world’s population, a staggering 1.9 billion people representing over 4,000 ethnic groups, 650 languages, and more than six practiced religions. In this diverse and vibrant region, Christians face active persecution, yet the spirit of faith continues to spark local initiatives.
Despite facing economic hardships, with 216 million people living below the poverty line and the social and legal challenges that come with faith, local leaders rise to plant churches, care for neighbors, and spread the gospel.

Within this context, the concept of the “unreachable” takes on a profound meaning. In missionary circles, “the unreachable” refers to those communities and individuals who have yet to hear the gospel. Much of South Asia falls within what is known as the 10/40 window, a region that comprises roughly 10% of the world’s population but remains largely unreached by the gospel message.
This term reminds us of both the urgency and the opportunity to reach out to people who have never known the love of Jesus.
Embracing Christianity in Asia: Challenges and Initiatives
The narrative of faith in South Asia is not just about numbers, it’s about people like Jovan who stand as living proof of resilience. However, the challenges are enormous:
Persecution and Social Rejection
Many believers endure hostility not only from society but also from their own families. The story of Jovan is a stark reminder of the personal sacrifices that often come with following Jesus.
Economic Hardship
With widespread poverty affecting millions, the financial struggles of everyday life can compound the challenges of living out one’s faith.
Legal and Political Barriers
In many parts of South Asia, legal systems are not friendly to Christianity, creating an environment where believers must practice their faith discreetly and courageously.
Mosaic's Vision
Despite these obstacles, there is a powerful movement at work. Mosaic International is committed to advancing Christianity in Asia by partnering with local churches and initiatives that aim to plant new churches, support indigenous leaders, and foster sustainable community growth.

Key Leadership: A Local Leader and the Movement
For security reasons, we are keeping the identity of this local leader anonymous. Central to this mission is the leadership of a dedicated local cross-cultural worker whose journey began in 1997.
His passion for reaching out to the large Hindu population has been a driving force in his ministry. He has embraced the challenges of cross-cultural ministry, equipping himself through years of seminary education and practical ministry work.
Under his guidance, local churches have been nurtured and empowered. His work is emblematic of the grassroots transformation happening across the region.
His story exemplifies how dedicated leadership can overcome overwhelming odds, turning adversity into opportunities for faith and growth.
With specialized skills and a compassionate heart, he is helping to build a network of believers who support one another in the face of persecution and poverty.
Strategic Partnerships: Mosaic International & STEP International
In 2020, Mosaic International connected with STEP International, a partner with deep roots in the country. STEP International has been a catalyst in raising local leadership since 2017 by:
Planting New Churches
Supporting church planting efforts that foster local, indigenous expressions of faith.
Educational and Vocational Opportunities
Equipping communities with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable growth.
Women’s Empowerment
Training and equipping women to take on leadership roles within their communities.
Pastoral Support
Providing resources to indigenous pastors and churches to help them achieve self-sustainability.
Why South Asia? The Urgent Need for Church Planting
South Asia remains one of the most spiritually needed regions in the world. Despite its vast population, the Bible has barely taken root in many areas. For many people here, the name of Jesus is still unknown, and the need for His saving grace is urgent.
This is why church planting is so critical, by establishing communities of faith, believers can find mutual support, grow spiritually, and, in time, share the transformative power of the gospel with their neighbors.
The Challenges Believers Face
Faith in Christ often comes at a steep price in South Asia. Many believers experience:
Persecution
Facing social rejection, economic marginalization, and even legal consequences for openly practicing their faith.
Isolation
With few fellow believers nearby, many Christians feel alone in their spiritual journey.
Resource Scarcity
Limited financial and material resources make it challenging to sustain church communities and outreach efforts.
