A Guide to Lent: Understanding the Season & Daily Prayer Guide (Free Download!)

Lent is a sacred season for the followers of Jesus; it is marked by reflection, repentance, and renewal. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a 40-day journey leading up to Easter, commemorating the time Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness. It is a time for believers to draw closer to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

Here at Mosaic International, we want to equip you with everything you need to fully embrace Lent and make it a season of spiritual growth and transformation.

That’s why we have created a FREE downloadable Lent Guide that includes:

  • An overview of Lent – What it is, why it matters, and how to observe it.

  • A 40-day prayer guide – Scripture-based prayers to help you stay focused each day.

  • Ways to fast and give – Ideas for meaningful sacrifices and acts of generosity.

What Is Lent & Why Do We Observe It?

Lent is a season of spiritual preparation leading up to the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday. Traditionally, it lasts for 40 days (excluding Sundays), mirroring the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert while resisting temptation.

During this time, to honor Jesus and grow closer to him, believers set aside distractions and focus on strengthening their relationship with Christ through three core practices:

1. Prayer – Deepening Your Relationship with God

Lent is a time to renew your prayer life, whether through personal devotion, corporate worship, or silent meditation. Our 40 Day Lent Prayer Guide (available in the free download) provides guided prayers to help you focus each day.

How to Grow in Prayer During Lent:

  • Set aside dedicated time for prayer daily.

  • Pray through specific scriptures related to Jesus' journey to the cross.

  • Use a prayer journal to write down reflections and answered prayers.

2. Fasting – Letting Go to Draw Closer to God

Fasting during Lent is about more than giving something up, it’s about making room for God in our lives. By fasting from food, social media, or other distractions, we remind ourselves that God is our true source of satisfaction.

Different Ways to Fast During Lent:

  • Traditional food fasting (e.g., skipping meals, giving up meat on Fridays).

  • Digital detox – reducing screen time to focus more on God’s presence.

  • Cutting out excess (e.g., shopping, entertainment) to create space for prayer.

Our free Lent Guide includes ideas for fasting that fit different lifestyles while keeping spiritual renewal as the focus.

3. Almsgiving – Serving Others with Generosity

Lent is not just about personal reflection; it’s also a call to love and serve others. Jesus taught that giving to those in need is an essential part of faith (Matthew 25:35-40).

Ways to Practice Almsgiving During Lent:

  • Donate to a local or global mission that aligns with your faith.

  • Volunteer your time in community outreach or church ministries.

  • Perform small, daily acts of kindness without seeking recognition.
